ATI Powers E3 with the Radeon X800 and a full serving of Half-Life®
2.
At the tenth annual Electronic Entertainment Expo, editors,
gamers and industry vets spent three days interacting with the
latest innovative, jaw-dropping and ‘must-have’ digital
games, hardware and accessories, all using the greatly anticipated
Radeon® X800 series of graphics card. Some of the most
memorable displays took place at the ATI booth, where an array
of exclusive greatly anticipated game previews, installations,
giveaways, and captivating new additions to the Radeon® family
were unveiled.
ATI’s Ruby and the Radeon® X800 Series
E3 marked the first public showing of Radeon® X800 technology,
with its unprecedented combination of up to 16 pipelines, breakthrough
image technology and ultra-fast memory to enable High Definition
gaming. The Radeon® X800 series showed off its power and
real-time rendering prowess through “The Doublecross”,
an ATI produced, fast-paced, CG featurette telling the story
of ATI’s Ruby, a special agent who faces off against four
ninjas, to retrieve a diamond orb from Optico, a villainous gangster
kingpin.
Half-Life® 2
The theater style presentation began with a familiar voice from
the past. “Wake up, Mr. Freeman,” the mysterious
G-Man muttered. “Wake up, and smell the ashes.” And
so started the electrifying preview of Half-Life 2, featuring
new, unreleased content. With promotional giveaways and special
appearances by Gabe Newell of Valve, it was no surprise that
two hour line-ups formed outside the Half-Life 2 theater for
an exclusive look at one of the world’s most anticipated
games.
The Matrix Online
Many “Mister Andersons” were muttered as visitors
examined props, gameplay and cool swag tied to the Matrix films
and games. Five life sized Agent Smiths, a Neo costume and a
Sentinel model used in the actual Matrix films. were hot ticket
displays, while The Matrix Online game was represented by a multiplayer
demo, a movie trailer for the game and six networked stations
manned by Monolith team members playing against an offsite server,
raising anticipation of the game’s release in November,
2004.
The Star Wars Zone
Every gamer has pictured themselves in a Star Wars scenario.
ATI provided a more immersive experience with the Star Wars
Zone, making visitors feel like they were looking out at the
universe from the Bridge of a Federation ship. The Zone contained
six systems with working, first-person multiplayer demos of
Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars Republic Commando. A third
playable title, Star Wars: Jump to Lightspeed, was a preview
of the first major addition to Star Wars Galaxies, the popular
massively-multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), due
in fall 2004.
Leisure Suit Larry Magna Cum Laude
He doesn’t fight battles in outer space, and he’s
not interested in alternate universes. But Larry likes to have
a good time, which was proven by ATI in support of Leisure Suit
Larry Magna Cum Laude. The Leisure Suit Larry area featured a
constructed Frat House from the game, complete with replica cheerleaders
handing out ATI swag and branded game gear. A playable demo was
available on four systems, showing off Larry’s hilarious
exploits updated for the 21 century with 3D graphics, engaging
real-time conversations and a fully realized college campus.
Military Zone
Nets overhead. An ominous feel in the air. This was the scene
at ATI’s Military Zone where Tribes Vengeance, the ultimate
high-flying, multiplayer battle experience was running on seven
systems. Set up on Dell XPS Inspiron Laptops, Tribes Vengeance
wowed players with six different characters and multiple timelines.
Completing the military theme were technical demos of Serious
Sam 2, featuring the game’s trademark huge, bright, colorful
levels and wide-open outdoor scenes.
The ATI booth also featured character and interactive technical
demos (Black and White 2), playable games (Guild Wars and Axis & Allies)
and game trailers (Sid Meier's Pirates and Roller Coaster Tycoon).
As long time industry innovators, ATI is proud to have played
a leading role at E3’s tenth anniversary, and to have powered
some of the show’s most compelling next generation titles
with Radeon X800 technology.
