    Press Release - Archives 1998

ATI targets system-integrators, VARs with industry-leading DVD software free-of-charge until April 18th

    March 11, 1998

Toronto, Ontario - ATI Technologies Inc. (TSE:ATY) today announced a special program for North American system-integrators and Value Added Resellers that includes an offer of leading DVD software free-of-charge until April 18th. The free DVD software will be included with SI and VAR orders for ATI's AGP 2X versions of board products that use ATI's RAGE PRO TURBO™ chip, including Xpert@Play™ AGP, Xpert@Work™ AGP, Xpert XL™ AGP and the All-In-Wonder Pro™ AGP. Software DVD, coupled with ATI's RAGE PRO TURBO chip, removes cost barriers for SIs and VARs to implement the industry's best DVD solutions for lower-cost systems.

ATI offers the highest quality software DVD option on the market as the result of the RAGE PRO TURBO's hardware assistance that it provides software DVD acceleration, technology called motion compensation. Designed for AGP systems, software DVD running on an ATI board, or through a RAGE PRO TURBO chip, represents the most cost-effective DVD solution on the market.

Hardware-assisted software DVD playback provides for full frame rates for the best quality gaming, theater, Web-surfing and other DVD applications without the need for a discreet DVD decoder, providing a significant competitive advantage for SIs and VARs. ATI was selected by Compaq Computers to provide the first full hardware-assisted software DVD solution for the mainstream market with the Compaq Presario 4840 and 4850, announced last fall.

ATI is also the leading shipper of AGP 2X (Accelerated Graphics Port) controllers in the world. The full benefit of AGP is only available through a 2X, 133 MHz implementation, one that includes SBA (SideBand Addressing) and pipelining. AGP allows the graphics controller to access system memory directly for 3D textures, rather than depending on local memory attached to the graphics controller. As a result, AGP allows for increased DVD performance and less CPU utilization than non-AGP solutions.

The Xpert@Play and Xpert@Work AGP accelerator boards provide in a single-slot solution the best combination of 2D, 3D and video acceleration in an add-in card for the SI and VAR market. Providing full frame rate DVD acceleration and a complete line up of 3D features, the boards provide an easy and cost-effective upgrade path to the best 3D and DVD available. The Xpert@Play AGP, with ATI's ImpacTV2™ technology for flicker-free display on TV sets, is the gamer's dream card, while the Xpert@Work AGP, finely tuned for corporate applications, is the preferred card for commercial applications.

ATI's All-In-Wonder Pro AGP board, winner of more magazine review awards than any product in ATI's history, provides the same superior graphics and DVD acceleration and quality as the Xpert@Play AGP and Xpert@Work AGP cards and adds TV tuning capability to produce true PC-to-TV convergence and a host of multimedia features and functions. Video capture, NTSC output-to-TV through ImpacTV2 and TV tuner functions that let the PC watch TV for you, informing you when desired programs are being aired and Instant Replay are possible with the All-In-Wonder Pro, offering SIs and VARs an opportunity to create the finest customized AGP and DVD systems for their customers.

ATI's Xpert XL AGP is the price/performance leader in the Xpert family of products, providing high quality 2D, 3D and video acceleration at a price below $100. With Xpert XL AGP, the only 2X AGP card available under $100, SIs and VARs can produce the lowest cost high quality DVD systems on the market.
