    Press Release - Archives 2000

ATI announces the S1-370 TL chipset, the world's first integrated chipset with 3D hardware geometry for the value PC market

128 bit architecture for faster graphics and system performance

Acquisition of ArtX Inc. advances ATI's integrated product line

    February 25, 2000

Toronto, Ontario - ATI Technologies Inc. (TSE: ATY, NASDAQ: ATYT) announced here today its integrated North Bridge and graphics chipset for Slot 1 and Socket 370 processors including Pentium II, and Pentium III, the ATI S1-370 TL. The world's fastest integrated chipset, ATI's S1-370 TL will be marketed to the OEM and motherboard manufacturers. ATI will also produce motherboards with the S1-370 TL to facilitate the introduction of the chipset to the market.

The introduction of the S1-370 TL chipset catapults ATI into the price/performance lead in the integrated market, several months ahead of its original schedule. The earlier-than-expected product introduction was made possible as a result of the acquisition by ATI of ArtX Inc. of Palo Alto, CA, a deal announced February 16, 2000.

"As the new president of ATI, I am really excited about introducing ATI's S1-370 TL chipset," said Dave Orton, the president and COO of ATI. "This is the strongest product in the integrated market and with ATI's sales and distribution strength behind it, we expect to capture a significant share of the value PC market."

Transform & Lighting, 32-bit color for the low cost PC platform
Among the many amazing features of the ATI's S1-370 TL chipset is its support for transform and lighting technology, usually reserved for high-end graphics subsystems and add-in boards. T&L is one of the major elements required for next generation game titles and other applications to provide totally immersive and realistic environments with life-like characters that look and move like human figures.

With a through-put of 12.5 million polygons per second, four pixels per clock and greater than 330 million textured pixels/sec, ATI's S1-370 TL chipset delivers fast and realistic game performance. Major 3D features include accelerated floating point geometry; texture co-ordinate transformation clipping; perspective projection; accelerated specular, diffuse and ambient lighting; perspective-correct trilinear-filtered MIP-mapped textures; alpha blending; exponential pixel fog; depth and stencil buffering and anti-aliasing.

ATI's S1-370 TL outperforms Intel i810e Performance is key to creating a compelling consumer experience. ATI's S1-370 TL provides 2X the 3D and game performance of an i810e as measured by WinBench 2000 and industry leading games like ID Software's Quake III Arena. The 128 bit architecture of the S1-370 TL provides significantly faster overall system performance. ATI's S1-370 TL chipset combines North Bridge system logic with ArtX's 3D graphics accelerator and is compatible with the single chip Ali M1535D and M1543 South Bridge parts. The only 128-bit Data Streaming architecture for SMA applications, ATI's S1-370 TL features a patented algorithm designed to enhance memory bandwidth, improving both graphics and system performance. With a 128 bit memory interface, supporting standard PC-133/100/66 MHz SDRAM, ATI's S1-370 TL provides 2.1 gigabytes/sec bandwidth. Supporting 133, 100, or 66 MHz CPU front side bus and, ATI's S1-370 TL enables the latest, fastest processors.

"A well-crafted 128-bit memory interface can provide low-cost systems with a surprising performance boost, delivering multimedia graphics and video beyond what would otherwise be expected," said Martin Reynolds, vice president and research technology assessment, Gartner Group/DataQuest. "High-performance integrated products will provide the foundation for PC-based entertainment appliances."

Motion compensation provides hardware DVD support
Motion compensation technology is a key element for smooth video on the PC and is usually reserved for high-end graphics accelerators. ATI's S1-370 TL chipset features motion compensation technology that delivers 30 frames-per-second DVD playback. Supporting 32-bit full color and resolutions up to 1600x1200 (non-interlaced), screen images are of the highest quality in the value PC market.

Supporting software includes optimized drivers for DirectX7 with Direct3D, OpenGL ICD, HWMC and GDI acceleration on Windows 98 and Windows 2000. Drivers are also available for Windows NT 4.0.

    Price and Availability
ATI's S1-370 TL chipset is being fabricated in .25µ at IBM. 100MHz samples are available now, with production quantities available in Q2, 2000. 133 samples will be available in Q2, 2000 with production volumes available in Q3, 2000. ATI's S1-370 TL is priced at $36 each in units of 10,000.
