    Press Release - Archives 2000

Extensive range of ATI's RAGE Mobility™ graphics chips selected for new IBM ThinkPad A20 series

Further design win for the world's fastest mobile graphics chip; RAGE Mobility 128™ to drive workstation business applications on new ThinkPad A20p high-performance model

RAGE Mobility-M1™ and RAGE Mobility-M™ also selected for series; used with the "all-in-one desktop replacement" ThinkPad A20m notebook

    May 2, 2000

Toronto, Canada - ATI Technologies Inc. (TSE: ATY, NASDAQ: ATYT) announced today that IBM has selected ATI's RAGE Mobility 128™, RAGE Mobility-M1™ and RAGE Mobility-M™ graphics chips for the new ThinkPad A Series of notebook PCs.

The new top-of-the-line ThinkPad A20p notebook PC, equipped with a RAGE Mobility 128 16MB graphics chip, is a market first, combining the largest graphics video memory, and highest LCD panel resolution (1400x1050 SXGA screen), found in the industry.

The combination of the RAGE Mobility 128's impressive graphics memory and power makes the ThinkPad A20p one of the most capable desktop replacement notebook PCs yet -- able to run the latest business, even workstation, or memory-intensive 3D game applications, with ease.

"IBM selected the ATI RAGE Mobility 128 for its high performance notebook PC because today's business environment requires corporate users to be highly productive wherever they may be, with no exceptions," said Fran O'Sullivan, VP Mobile Computing Development, IBM Personal Systems Group.

By using the integrated TMDS transmitter of the RAGE Mobility 128, the ThinkPad A20p can power a DVI panel, connected to a docking station, permitting operation of a completely flat panel (LCD & DVI) display configuration.

"ATI's RAGE Mobility 128 is an industry first, narrowing the performance gap between desktop and notebook PCs to the point that the mobile computing platform can be considered a true desktop equivalent for business, no compromise required," said Bill Henry, director of mobile component marketing, ATI Technologies Inc. "IBM's selection of ATI's latest mobile graphics chip creates the most powerful notebook configuration in the industry, a true end user's 'dream machine' for both work and play."

IBM in addition has selected ATI's RAGE Mobility-M1 and RAGE Mobility-M graphics chips for the also announced ThinkPad A20m 'all-in-one desktop replacement' series of corporate notebook PCs. RAGE Mobility chips are matched in the ThinkPad A20 Series with the latest Intel processor technology, including the Intel® mobile Pentium® III processor with SpeedStep® technology, at speeds up to 700MHz.

By paying careful attention to the chip design, ATI with RAGE Mobility is able to deliver 2X performance advance that consumes power only when actively running 3D. During idle periods the graphics controller automatically switches off parts of the chip that are not needed. Paired with the CPU's SpeedStep technology, users get performance on demand and extend battery life at all other times. The ThinkPad A20p is balanced to provide CPU and graphics performance capable of the most demanding content creation, data visualization and product design applications. This is truly a workstation that fits in a briefcase.
