ATI to support next-generation 3GIO architecture
PCI/AGP successor will be interconnect specification for future I/O
Wednesday August 29, 2001
MARKHAM, Ontario –
ATI Technologies Inc. (TSE:ATY, NASDAQ:ATYT), a world leader in the supply of graphics, video and multimedia solutions, today announced its participation as a key developer for the next-generation 3GIO interconnect architecture, a serial I/O (input/output) interconnect specification that will allow high-speed connection of components inside a system as well as offer increased bandwidth for emerging applications.
While PCI (peripheral component interconnect), the current I/O interconnect specification, will continue to be used in product designs, the 3GIO architecture offers an opportunity for the personal computer industry to develop a new interconnect to address bandwidth demands of increasingly powerful applications such as desktop, mobile, servers and embedded communications. 3GIO will be the general-purpose interconnect of the future for these demanding applications.
“ATI’s decision to participate as a key developer in the 3GIO initiative continues a long tradition of active involvement in the development of next-generation, industry-standard technologies,” said Rick Bergman, Senior Vice President of Marketing & General Manager, Desktop Business, ATI Technologies Inc. “As the pioneer and industry leader in the development of industry-standard 2D and 3D graphics technologies, our participation and commitment to timely execution on the delivery of new standards and products will ensure ATI continues to lead technology advancement in the graphics industry.”
“ATI’s announcement today that it will participate as a key developer in the 3GIO specification development is significant. Strong industry collaboration is the catalyst for innovation. 3GIO is the next step in delivering the bandwidth and features required for exciting new graphics applications,” said Bob Gregory, Director, Strategic Planning, Desktop Platforms Group, Intel Corporation. “We look forward to working with ATI to develop the next industry standard in serial I/O interconnect architecture.”
