ATI Technologies Announces Its Technology to be Used in Scientific-Atlanta Explorer Set-tops
Wednesday, June
12, 2002
MARKHAM, Ontario - ATI Technologies Inc.
(TSE:ATY, NASDAQ:ATYT) announced today that Scientific-Atlanta
plans to integrate ATI's Xilleon™-based products, including
chips and software, into Scientific-Atlanta's Explorer™
digital interactive set-tops.
"By combining ATI's innovative Xilleon technology with
Scientific-Atlanta's rich history in the set-top market and
solid understanding of MSO needs, we can provide cable operators
and consumers with a solid offering," said Bob Van Orden,
vice president, product strategy and management, Scientific-Atlanta.
"With its unique features like dual display and high-definition
video decode, Xilleon 220 will enable the capabilities consumers
want aboard Explorer digital interactive set-tops."
The highly integrated Xilleon will provide MSOs (multiple
system operators) additional revenue opportunities such as
VOD (video-on-demand), 3D gaming, multi-stream video, PVR
(personal video recording), PIP (picture-in-picture) and much
more. Xilleon 220's worldwide standard support for all major
networks (DVB, ATSC, BS Digital, MHP) enables developers to
use a single platform for multiple markets and further reduce
costs.
"We're proud to be working with Scientific-Atlanta by
providing a chipset designed to enable exciting interactive
and on-demand services," said Adrian Hartog, Senior Vice
President & General Manager, Consumer Products Group,
ATI Technologies Inc. "While Xilleon-based products are
designed to reduce system cost, they help to enable cable
operators to deliver the services consumers want today and
tomorrow."
Xilleon 220 integrates into a single chip all processor, graphics,
video, audio, and I/O (input and output) capabilities needed
in a set-top box or digital TV. Included are a 300 MHz MIPS®
CPU (central processing unit), dual-HD (high definition) capable
MPEG decoder, audio decoder, dual display engine, 2D and 3D
graphics engine, conditional access, transport demultiplexers,
PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect), USB (universal serial
bus), and hard disk drive interfaces.
Xilleon 220 is available in two versions. Xilleon 220S supports
standard definition video decode while Xilleon 220H supports
both standard-definition and high-definition video.
