ATI and Metro Link Join Forces To Deliver Personal Video Recorder (PVR) Solution
Metro Link's Metro MediaWorks™ to be demonstrated running on ATI's Xilleon 220™ at CES
Wednesday, January 8, 2003
MARKHAM, Ontario - ATI Technologies
Inc. (TSX:ATY, NASDAQ:ATYT) and Metro Link announced today
that they have jointly developed a PVR and interactive TV solution
that they will be making available to manufacturers of set-top
boxes and digital TVs. The solution, based on Metro Link's Metro
MediaWorks™ software and ATI's Xilleon 220, will
be demonstrated at the International Consumer Electronics Show
(CES) 2003 in Las Vegas, Nevada from January 9 to 12, 2003.
The solution integrates functions of the Metro Media software
including multi-function PVR for standard definition and
high definition formats, PSIP, MP3 and a variety of other capabilities
with ATI's market leading Xilleon 220 chipset. This technology
combination will enable OEMs (original equipment manufacturers)
of set-top boxes, digital TVs, and other consumer electronics
devices to benefit from a ready-integrated and cost-effective
solution that will reduce their time-to-market.
"Metro Link is extremely pleased to be partnering with
ATI, one of the market leaders in DTV silicon solutions,"
says Tony Naples Vice President Sales & Marketing of Metro
Link. "The ATI Xilleon family of processors sets the bar
for today's DTV chips with dynamic multi-streaming video, robust
graphics and the processing power to take full advantage of
Metro Link's Metro MediaWorks™ software. The modular nature
of Metro MediaWorks™ can be fully exploited on a full-featured
multi-media system or selectively implemented on mid-range
and
low-end units that emphasize value, all driven by the same
ATI Xilleon family of processors."
"ATI Xilleon 220 solution for the DTV market is an ideal,
highly integrated solution for Personal Video Recorder capabilities,"
said David Gould, Senior Software Marketing Manager, DTV Group,
Consumer Products Division, ATI Technologies Inc. "Metro
Link provides us with an integrated, robust media engine and
a rich set of APIs to drive this functionality to the marketplace
for our DTV customers."
Metro Link's Metro MediaWorks™ is a powerful, multi-function,
scalable media engine that can be deployed in a full-featured
Home Media Center or distributed in modular form for single
purpose consumer electronic devices. The media engine includes
capabilities for PVR, processing analog signals (NTSC &
PAL), digital streams from broadcast, terrestrial & satellite
(ATSC, DVB & DVB-T), MP3 (Playback Creation & Record),
DVD, web browsing, and a flexible user interface with development
kit for customizing the look and feel for enhanced customer
experience.
ATI's Xilleon 220 integrates into a single chip all processor,
graphics, video, audio, and I/O (input and output) capabilities
needed in a set-top box or digital TV. Included are a 300
MHz MIPS® CPU (central processing unit), dual-HD (high definition)
capable MPEG decoder, audio decoder, dual display engine, 2D
and 3D graphics engine, conditional access, transport demultiplexers,
PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect), USB (universal serial
bus), and hard disk drive interfaces.
MetroLink and ATI are demonstrating Xilleon and Metro MediaWorks™ at
International CES at ATI's booth (booth #31145, south hall)
January 9-12, 2003 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
