    Press Release - 2003

ATI and RDI Improve DTV Signal Reception with Smart Antenna Technology

ATI Nxtenna Technology and RDI DTV-5000 Antenna demonstrated at NAB Drafthouse

    Monday April 7, 2003

MARKHAM, Ontario – ATI Technologies Inc. (TSX:ATY, NASDAQ:ATYT) and RDI Inc today announced the exhibition of the new RDI DTV-5000 smart antenna, controlled by ATI’s Nxtenna technology, at 2003 National Association of Broadcasters Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, using the EIA/CEA-909 Antenna Control Interface Standard.

Smart antenna technology enables optimal reception of ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) DTV signals. Classical TV antennas require the consumer to adjust the antenna to receive signals in null signal conditions, when regional transmit antennas are not co-located, or when reflections cause the reception path to vary from channel to channel. Consumers using digital televisions and antennas that comply with CEA Antenna Control Interface Standard (EIA/CEA-909) simplify their off-air DTV experience by eliminating the need to manually adjust the antenna to receive a clear picture. The standard allows DTV receivers to optimize performance by adjusting the antenna gain, polarization, and beam direction.

ATI ATSC-based receiver chips, such as the NXT™2003, NXT™2004, NXT™2005 and the new THEATER™310 all have embedded Nxtenna technology that can characterize the received channel and adjust the smart antenna for the best attainable reception. Also, all of these devices have a CEA/EIA-909 compatible interface.

“ATI continues to advance DTV off-air reception through new products such as our THEATER 310 VSB/QAM/NTSC receiver, E-VSB technology proposal submitted to the ATSC, and Nxtenna technology,” said Mike Gittings, Director of Digital Television Marketing, DTV/Consumer Products Group, ATI Technologies Inc. “The combination of smart antennas and DTV products using Nxtenna technology benefit everyone. It simplifies the consumer DTV experience, creates a new feature for consumer electronics manufacturers, and ensures that free to air broadcast content can be received by the maximum number of viewers.”

RDI has developed the first practical “Smart Antenna”, the DTV-5000. Traditionally, consumers had two options when selecting an antenna system: directional or omni-directional. Directional antennas minimize multipath and maximize gain but require that the viewer reposition the antenna in some instances. Omni-directional antennas receive in all directions but do not have optimal multipath and gain characteristics. The DTV-5000 offers the performance of directional antennas and the convenience of omni-directional devices.

“RDI has a long history of building and selling quality TV antennas. We have long known that diversity antennas have great potential to improve indoor reception,” said Barry Miller, President of RDI Inc. “RDI was an active participant the development of the EIA/CEA-909 standard and a leader in the development of smart antennas. The DTV-5000, the first smart antenna, is the result of that work.”

In conjunction with the ATSC, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), ATI’s NXTenna technology will be on display with digital television (DTV) products and technology in the DTV Drafthouse located in the Las Vegas Convention Center Central Grand Lobby at NAB 2003.

ATI Technologies will exhibit its DTV technologies at NAB 2003 in booth SU7313 (south hall) April 7-11, 2003 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
