Q11: Is there a limit to the size of files I can capture?

Q12: Which DV camcorders are supported by the DV WONDER™ product?

Q1: What is the DV WONDER™?
A1: The DV WONDER™ is a PCI card which adds three (3) 1394 FireWire® ports to your computer. It allows you to connect digital video (DV) camcorders to your PC for high-quality video editing. Create professional-quality productions with the easy-to-use video editing software included in the box. The DV WONDER™ also allows you to add other 1394 products to your PC - external hard drives, scanners, printers and more!

Q2: What operating systems does the DV WONDER™ support?
A2: The DV WONDER™ provides full support for Windows® 98 Second Edition, Windows® 2000 and Windows® ME. Windows® 98 Gold Edition (the first release of Windows® 98) will install drivers for the board which will allow users to connect 1394 peripherals, but does not include drivers to allow proper camcorder operation.

Q3: How do I check which operating system I am using?
A3: Open CONTROL PANEL and double click on the SYSTEM icon. The operating system version will be listed in the "General" tab, under the "System" heading. Windows® 98 SE is listed as "4.10.2222 A" and Windows® 98 First Edition is listed as "4.10.1998".

Q4: What kind of video capture can I do with the DV WONDER™?
A4: The DV WONDER™ allows you to capture digital DV video from a DV camcorder or DV videocassette recorder. It cannot capture analog video through a composite or S-Video port. Users intending to capture analog video from an analog camcorder or VCR should consider the TV WONDER™ or All-in-Wonder® family of products.

Q5: What are the system requirements of the bundled Ulead® VideoStudio™ 5 software?
A5: Ulead® VideoStudio™ 5 requires Windows® 98SE, Windows® ME or Windows® 2000, 64MB of RAM, and 300MB of disk space. A video card with overlay support will provide higher quality video playback, but is not required.

Q6: In what formats can the DV WONDER™ products capture video?
A6:
The DV WONDER™ can transfer raw DV video from your camcorder or digital VCR. The video is captured at its full 720x480 resolution in DV format, which uses about 4 MB of disk space per second (approximately 200MB per minute). This video is transferred in real-time and can only be saved in its native DV form.

Using the bundled Ulead® VideoStudio™ 5 software, this video can be compressed into a variety of formats, including MPEG and Windows® streaming video formats. These formats offer much smaller file sizes and are suitable for transfer to CD or posting to websites. A full list of file types supported for export follows:
  • MPEG-1, MPEG-2
  • AVI (Windows® compressed using Indeo or Cinepak)
  • MJPG (Motion JPEG)
  • MOV, QT (QuickTime)
  • RM (RealMedia™ 7)
  • WMV, ASF (Windows® media streaming format)

Q7: What international video standards are supported by DV WONDER™?
A7:
The DV WONDER™ supports all flavors of DV, including the following:
  • NTSC
  • Secam L, PAL B/G
  • Secam D/K, PAL B/G/D/K/I

Q8: Is the DV WONDER™ OHCI-compliant?
A8: Yes, the DV WONDER™ is OHCI-compliant (Open Host Controller Interface) which uses the IEEE 1394 specifications. This means the DV WONDER™ can not only capture video but also has the ability to control a variety of other hardware devices including hard drives, scanners, audio & video devices and digital still cameras.

Q9: What do I do if Ulead® VideoStudio™ 5 can't detect my camcorder?
A9: If you are having trouble detecting your camcorder, please check that the connector cable is firmly connected into your camcorder and into the DV WONDER™ card. Secondly, check that the DV WONDER™ card is being detected properly by your operating system. This can be done by,
Open Device Manager and ensure that an "OHCI Compatible 1394 Device" is listed. If this device is not listed, please shut down your system and try installing the card in a different PCI slot.
If your 1394 DV WONDER™ card is detected, but Ulead® VideoStudio™ has trouble detecting drivers for your camcorder, please install the DirectX® 8.0 Digital Video Update. It can be found at: http://www.microsoft.com/directx/default.asp

This update should be installed after installing the DirectX® 8.0 or 8.0a runtime. The update provides improved device support for Windows® 2000 and Windows® 98SE, as well as minor improvements for use with Windows® ME. It also provides PAL support.

Q10: Can I use the DV WONDER™ for peer-to-peer 1394 networking?
A10: By using (2) DV WONDER™ cards, two PCs can be networked with software that is built into Windows® ME. A 6-pin to 6-pin FireWire® connector should be used to connect the (2) PCs.

Q11: Is there a limit to the size of files I can capture?
A11: No. You are limited only to the amount of free space on your hard drive. Under Windows® 98 and Windows® ME, individual files are limited to 4 GB (due to the FAT32 file system). Ulead® VideoStudio™ 5 overcomes this problem by spanning files when this limit is hit. Thus, you can capture a continuous and seamless stream of video, but it may appear as several files on your hard-drive.

Q12: Which DV camcorders are supported by the DV WONDER™ product?
A12: The following is a list of tested camcorders:
