|
| Q1: |
What are the new ATI Radeon™ based
graphics accelerators? |
| A1: |
ATI currently offers two Radeon™ based
graphics cards for Mac® OS. ATI Radeon™ Mac Edition AGP
version and ATI Radeon™ Mac Edition PCI version. Radeon™
Mac Edition, offers high-end content creators and gaming
enthusiasts the most advanced 3D graphics processing available.
32MB of Double Data Rate(DDR) SDRAM memory provides, intense
photo-realism. Games come to life with fluid movement,
and rich textures without compromising speed. |
| |
|
| Q2: |
What is the graphics processing unit(GPU)
used on these boards? |
| A2: |
The Radeon™ Mac Edition graphics card
is powered by ATI's Radeon™ GPU. |
| |
|
| Q3: |
What advanced chip technology is incorporated
into the Radeon™ GPU? |
| A3: |
The Radeon™ GPU features many new and
leading edge technologies. The Charisma Engine™ and Pixel Tapestry™ architecture, will provide customers with the
best visual experience, faster performance and crisper
images.
Charisma Engine™
The Charisma Engine™ is the fastest geometry processing
unit (GPU) and the first to use acceleration for advanced
character animation features. The Radeon™ Charisma Engine™
supports full transformation, clipping and lighting (T&L)
at 30 million triangles/second for a ten fold improvement
in 3D details. 3D game characters are brought to life
with Charisma Engine™ support, for cutting-edge character
animation such as vertex skinning and key frame interpolation
Pixel Tapestry™ Architecture
Radeon™ delivers the fastest 32-bit color rendering performance
available, and supports three-way multi-texturing and
new 3D effects without compromising speed. The Pixel Tapestry™
architecture is the first to process up to 3 textures
per pixel in a single clock cycle, bringing 3D worlds
to life with incredible detail and realism. It easily
handles complex 3D graphics elements such as metals and
wood, and their interactions with lights and shadows. |
| |
|
| Q4: |
What is the clock speed of the Radeon™
Mac Edition? |
| A4: |
The clock speed is 166/166MHz |
| |
|
| Q5: |
Where can I find Radeon™ Mac Edition? |
| A5: |
ATI Radeon™ Mac Edition, is available
in all existing retail locations, and catalogs currently
offering ATI products. You can also visit the SHOP
ATI section of our site to buy online or to locate
a retailer near you. |
| |
|
| Q6: |
What systems are compatible with Radeon™
Mac Edition? |
| A6: |
Radeon™ Mac Edition AGP version is designed
to fit into AGP-based Mac® systems with the exception
noted below (see Q8 and A8). Radeon™ Mac Edition PCI is
designed for PCI-based Mac® systems, even those limited
to 7" cards such as the Performa systems or the Power
Macintosh® 6400 or 6500. |
| |
|
| Q7: |
Will Radeon™ Mac Edition cards work
in the 66MHz PCI slot within Apple Power Macintosh® G3
systems? |
| A7: |
Yes, Radeon™ Mac Edition PCI version
is compatible with both the 33MHz and 66MHz PCI slots
in any PCI Power Macintosh® or PCI Mac® OS compatible
system.
|
| |
|
| Q8: |
Will the Radeon™ Mac Edition boards
fit the G4 CUBE? |
| A8: |
While there is a Radeon™ based board
available for order in Apple's CTO (configure to order)
program for Power Macintosh® G4 CUBE, this card is dimensionally
different from retail versions. The retail version of
Radeon™ Mac Edition will not fit the Power Macintosh®
G4 CUBE. |
| |
|
| Q9: |
Is Radeon™ Mac Edition available for
the Apple PowerBook™ G3? |
| A9: |
No, Radeon™ Mac Edition is available
in AGP and PCI configurations for Power Mac™ desktop systems
only. Graphics boards (like most hardware devices) cannot
be removed or replaced from laptop computers |
| |
|
| Q10: |
Can the on-board memory be upgraded? |
| A10: |
Radeon™ Mac Edition cards are not memory upgradeable |
| |
|
| Q11: |
What is the benefit of large on-board
memories? |
| A11: |
With larger amounts of memory, you can
set your display to higher resolutions and greater color
depths (i.e. 32-bit), giving you crisper and more detailed
images. With the added memory, you will realize better
performance with texture-intensive games and graphics
hungry applications. |

|
| Q13: |
Do Radeon™ based Macintosh® boards
support DVD acceleration? |
| A13: |
Radeon™ Mac Edition is compatible with
the Apple DVD Player 2.2. |
| |
|
| Q14: |
Do retail Radeon™ Mac Edition boards
support the Apple Display Connector? |
| A14: |
No, the retail Radeon™ Mac Edition does
not have support for the power and USB requirements of
the new Apple Digital Connector (ADC). The retail Radeon™
Mac Edition supports DVI and VGA monitors directly and
ships with an adapter to support older analog Apple® monitors
with the DB15 connector. |
| |
|
| Q15: |
Does Radeon™ Mac Edition support the
Apple® Cinema Display™? |
| A15: |
No, Radeon™ Mac Edition does not support
the Apple® Cinema Display™. There is a system option available
from Apple® at the time of purchase that includes a custom
Radeon™ graphics board. See the Apple® website for more
information. www.apple.com
|
| |
|
| Q16: |
Will there be a 64MB Radeon™ Mac Edition?
|
| A16: |
Currently, ATI is focusing on the two
32MB configurations of Radeon™ Mac Edition as larger frame
buffers are not generally utilized in the current and
upcoming applications and games planned on Mac® OS. |
| |
|
| Q17: |
Does Radeon™ Mac Edition support TV-output?
|
| A17: |
Yes. Both composite and S-Video outputs
are supported. |
| |
|
| Q18: |
Does Radeon™ Mac Edition support video
capture? |
| A18: |
No. In early Summer 2001, ATI will be
launching Xclaim™ TV USB EDITION, an external TV tuner
pod for the Mac® that supports video capture. |
| |
|
| Q19: |
Is there a Loyalty Program for existing
owners of ATI Mac cards who wish to upgrade to Radeon™
cards? |

Yes. Please see the Trade
up section of our web site for future announcements.
|
| |
|
| Q20:
|
What are the details regarding incompatibility
between legacy system/monitor configurations and Radeon™
Mac Edition PCI? |
| A20: |
Some combinations of older(greater than
5 years) Apple® computers and monitors are incompatible
with Radeon™ Mac Edition PCI. There are two types of compatibility
issues: Chassis Design and Apple® Sense Support.
Chassis Design
Apple® 9500 and Apple® 8500 are built in a way which requires
one of the nuts on the Radeon™ Mac Edition PCI bracket
be removed, in order for the graphics board to be inserted
into the PCI slot. Once installed, the VGA port is inaccessible
(due to chassis design) but still functional. Only the
DVI connector is easily accessible on these Apple® computer
models. If the user wishes to use the VGA port, it is
possible for the user to modify his/her case in a way,
so there would be sufficient clearance for a monitor cable
to connect to the VGA port of the ATI card. Customers
with these systems should contact ATI at support@ati.com
to receive a DVI-to-VGA connector at no cost.
Apple® 7200 and Apple® 7500 also require the removal of
one of the nuts on the Radeon™ Mac Edition PCI bracket
in order for the graphics board to be inserted into the
computer's PCI slot. Unlike the systems noted above, the
VGA connector is accessible on these machines.
