Q1: What is Multimedia Center™ 8.1?
 
A1:
Multimedia Center 8.1 is the latest version of ATI’s award winning PC based entertainment suite of applications. Included are:
  • TV Player – for integrated TV playback on a PC (requires an All-in-Wonder® or TV WONDER™ card)
  • DVD Player – Fully featured DVD playback
  • VCD Player – for playback of authored or created VCDs
  • CD Player – Integrated with online database to provide Title / Artist info
  • File Player – Provides playback of many standard captured file formats
  • MMC Library – Manage and maintain multimedia content easily.
 
 
Q2: Which ATI products support MMC 8.1?
 
A2: MMC 8.1 runs on all built by ATI Radeon™ cards, and All-in-Wonder® cards from the Radeon™ to the 9700 PRO.
 
Q3: What operating systems support MMC 8.1?

MMC 8.1 runs on Windows® XP, Windows® 2000, and Windows® ME. In addition, Microsoft® DirectX® 9 is recommended.

 
 
Q4 Will MMC 8.1 run on Windows® 9X or Windows® SE?
 
A4:

For Windows® 9X/SE users, MMC 8.1 will run using the Windows® ME drivers. However, support for capturing WMV9 content is not provided by Microsoft for Windows® 9X/SE.

For existing users of MMC 7.X, the following list provides the new and improved features of MMC 8.1:
  • Support for MULTVIEW™ when combined with an ATI TV WONDER™ PCI card
    • Picture-in-Picture (PiP)
    • Picture-outside-Picture (PoP)
    • Record one while viewing another
    • Watch while channel surfing.
  • VideoSoap™ - advanced filtering and noise reduction for personal video recordings
  • Improved MPEG encode performance and quality including
    • True field based capture and TV-on-Demand™
    • Improved overall quality at half the bitrate.
  • Extended automatic file naming options
  • User remappable custom capture presets
  • User configurable AVI Audio and Video codecs
  • Support for MS WMV9 (a.k.a. "Corona")
  • AVI Files larger than 2 Gig.
  • Adds the Closed Caption (CC) database which includes:
    • the ability to search CC data for TV-on-Demand™
    • the ability to seek based on CC data for TV-on-Demand™
    • the ability to seek and search based on CC data for captured ATI VCR files
  • Fast access to the most recently recorded content
  • DVD now includes:
    • support for still capture
    • support for simultaneous dual sub-titles
    • improved S/PDIF support
    • improved title compatibility
  • Media Library can now:
    • Protect files from deletion
    • Recommend content for deletion (disk clean up)
    • Export "m3u" style playlists
  • File Player now supports the ThruView™ desktop mode
 
Q6: What are the system requirements for MMC 81.?

In addition to a built by ATI Radeon™ or All-in-Wonder® card, the following list provides minimum system requirements:
  • Sound Card with DirectSound drivers
  • Motherboard with AGP or PCI bus slot
  • USB Port (for RF remote control)
  • PIII 500, AMD K7 500 or better recommended
  • 128 MB of memory recommended
  • Windows® 98(SE), Windows® ME, Windows® 2000 or Windows® XP
  • DirectX® 9
 
Q7: Do I need to purchase MMC 8.1?
 
A7:

Owners of Radeon™ 9000/9500/9700 series graphics adapters and All-in-Wonder® 9700PRO / 9000 / VE multimedia adapters have access to a free upgrade to MMC 8.1.

Owners of older ATI products that currently run MMC 7.7.0.1 or older software will need to purchase an upgrade to MMC 8.1. Information on purchasing an upgrade can be found at ati.com.

 
Q8: Why am I being asked to insert my original software CD during my upgrade to MMC 8.1?
 
A8: Upgrading to MMC 8.1 requires your original software CD for validation purposes. If you cannot locate your original CD, a CD can be purchased online at ati.com.
