FAQs

1. What is CrossFire?

A. CrossFire™ is a high-performance PC Gaming Platform technology that enables multiple ATI Radeon™ graphics cards and a CrossFire-ready motherboard in a single computer to increase graphics quality and performance. By intelligently scaling graphics capabilities, CrossFire provides an incredibly immersive gaming experience through stunning visual realism in today's 3D titles with uncompromising image quality at extreme HD resolutions. CrossFire redefines the PC gaming platform with industry leading performance, scalability, image quality and compatibility.

2. What are the major benefits of the CrossFire platform?

A. The major benefits of the CrossFire platform are:

  • CrossFire was designed from the ground up to be the performance benchmark in multi-GPU gaming. With CrossFire, incredible frame rates, especially at the extreme graphics settings available with XHD monitors (2560x1600), are easily achievable.
  • CrossFire is an open platform that supports the broadest range of components and chipsets to give the enthusiast the ultimate in selection and performance
  • CrossFire supports the broadest number of rendering modes for high performance and image quality.

3. What graphics cards work with CrossFire?

  • A complete CrossFire system requires a CrossFire capable motherboard and a minimum of two CrossFire capable graphics cards.
  • CrossFire capable graphics cards and motherboards are available at many performance and price points to meet the needs of nearly all gamers and budgets.

5. What happens when graphics cards with varying memory speeds and engine clocks are paired together?

A. In this scenario, overall performance will be adjusted to match the memory speeds and engine clocks of the lower clocked card. To obtain ideal performance, graphics cards should be paired correctly.

For a list of compatible products, refer to the Combination Options chart

6. Can I use the CrossFire platform to drive multiple displays?

A. Yes, the CrossFire platform will work with ATI SurroundView™ multi-monitor technology to enable up to 5 separate displays when not running in CrossFire mode.

7. What games work with CrossFire?

A. CrossFire is designed to work best with 3D games.

8. Do all 3D games see a benefit with CrossFire?

A. Most new 3D games are designed to scale with multiple graphics cards. Gamers will see large performance increases with multi-GPU systems in these applications. 3D applications that heavily stress the graphics subsystem (such as modern 3D first person shooters at high resolutions) tend to demonstrate the greatest performance improvements. For games that do not fully stress the graphics subsystem, such as when gaming on lower resolution monitors, CrossFire offers extreme image quality modes that take advantage of the additional graphics power, and improves the overall gaming experience.

9. What performance improvement does CrossFire bring?

A. Performance enhancements with CrossFire are application dependent. Performance improvements vary up to 100% increases in frame rates. New, graphics intensive applications benefit most with performance improvements at high resolutions and image quality settings.
