    Press Release

ATI unveils Mobility™ Radeon®: world's highest performance, most feature-rich graphics processor for the notebook PC

  • Extends critically-acclaimed Radeon® technology to mobile PC market

ATI Technologies Inc. (TSE: ATY, NASDAQ: ATYT), the world leader in mobile 3D graphics, video and multimedia solutions (1), today unveiled Mobility™ Radeon®, the highest performance, most feature-rich mobile graphics processor in the world.

Mobility Radeon introduces ATI's leading edge, critically acclaimed Radeon® 3D graphics processor technology to the portable computing marketplace, achieving industry-leading performance in that space. It affords customers new levels of low power consumption - meaning longer battery life, and also offers them a number of feature- rich solutions, including user-friendly dual display capability, the smallest footprint through the highest level of integration, and multimedia benefits drawn from ATI's All-in-Wonder™ family of products.

"The Mobility Radeon family allows ATI to lead with the best performance for high-end notebooks and scale to the lowest power and most integrated 8 MB solution for long battery life in ultra-portables," said Lou Leung, Vice President & General Manager, Mobile Business Unit, ATI Technologies Inc. "But, ATI's strength in mobile graphics goes well beyond any one product family.

"ATI's "one-stop-shop" mobile All-in-Wonder solution enables OEMs to satisfy their growing need for complete multimedia solutions, without having to deal with multiple vendors for hardware and software support," added Mr. Leung. "The voltage and frequency throttling technology found in Mobility Radeon optimises power and performance, while Hydravision™ software addresses current usability challenges with multi-monitors."

    (1) ATI had a 57 percent share of the mobile graphics market, as of Q4 2000, according to Mercury Research

Continuing ATI's tradition of developing multiple versions of its mobile graphics chip products, Mobility Radeon is available in four models with flexible memory support - and one driver for the entire product family - to offer notebook computer manufacturers with a wide range of solutions that match virtually every OEM price and performance point, from high end to value systems. Mobility Radeon also includes ATI's innovative MCM (Multi-Chip Module) technology, for which the Company is a world leader, shipping more than 10.6 million MCM components to date.

Industry reviewers have praised ATI's Radeon graphics processor for the technological advances it has brought to desktop computer graphics and multimedia. Mobility Radeon now brings those advances to the notebook PC platform. These advances include ATI's HYPER-Z™ compression hardware technology, which improves performance by boosting effective memory bandwidth by more than 20 percent; Pixel Tapestry™ architecture, a highly-optimised 32-bit colour rendering engine that supports three-way multi-texturing and new 3D effects without compromising speed; Dual DAC (Digital-to-Analogue Converter) for cost-effective, independent, multi-monitor support at maximum resolutions; and Video Immersion™, which provides industry-leading video playback with adaptive de-interlacing, processing of full-frame rate, full-screen DVD and integrated motion compensation.

Combined with ATI's recently announced TV WONDER™ USB EDITION external tuner, Mobility Radeon delivers new levels of multimedia functionality in a notebook PC, providing mobile All-in-Wonder capability in a single package, and eliminating the need for OEM customers to deal with multiple hardware and software vendors for development and support. Deploying Mobility Radeon, the notebook PC platform can perform all the tasks a desktop computer can, including video editing, display TV viewing windows, running the latest video power games, and operating smooth DVD replay, among an extensive range of the industry's latest applications.

In addition, Mobility Radeon further refines ATI's already unparalleled power management technology, producing the industry's lowest power consumption levels -- as low as half a watt, including 8 MB of memory -- in typical 2D, 3D and DVD modes. At the same time, ATI also continues to pioneer the industry's advances in multi-display support. Mobility Radeon supports resolutions up to QXGA (Quad Extended Graphics Array) standard (2048 X 1536 pixels), an industry first, bringing a new level of display resolution and configuration flexibility to the mobile market.

Mobility Radeon is currently being evaluated by the world's major notebook PC manufacturers for inclusion of this latest ATI technology in their next-generation products.
